As many of my family, friends and clients know, I am an active member of the Junior League of Jacksonville. Junior League is an organization of women committed to improving the community through service and volunteerism. The Jacksonville guild is amazing! This is not a group that sits around in their pearls drinking tea and gossiping. (Well…sometimes we wear jeans, drink wine and talk about girl stuff.)
This group is making a difference through hard work! This year I am on the Fostering Cares Committee which is mainly responsible for coordinating Junior League’s involvement in Operation Backpack. This year, Operation Backpack is a community drive between First Coast News, Junior League and Kmart and other community businesses and sponsors including AmerTac which recently donated 2,500 nightlights to our cause!
If you are not familiar with Operation Backpack, it is held Labor Day weekend September 1 at area Kmart stores. First Coast News publicizes the event, Junior League volunteers staff it, and Kmart hosts it. Community members are encouraged to donate gently used and new backpacks. Junior League volunteers fill the backpacks with personal items, books and toys for area foster children that are suddenly removed from their homes with little to nothing. The backpacks provide a small amount of comfort and care to the kids during a scary time.
Please stop by an area Kmart Labor Day weekend and donate a backpack (or 2 or 3) to Operation Backpack. I will be heading up the Neptune Beach site if you’d like to stop by and say hi. I’ll be right out front with other Junior League volunteers. If you’ll be out of town that weekend I can accept backpack donations from clients, family & friends. I’ll be sure to take lots of pics that weekend, so check back in September for an update. Thanks for supporting Operation Backpack!
